Treon Harris attorney: 'I don't think it warrants an arrest or prosecution'
Gator quarterback suspended for sexual assault; attorney hopes for speedy resolution
The attorney for University of Florida quarterback Treon Harris said he hopes the investigation of his client for a possible sexual assault in the early morning hours of Sunday will be completed soon and that his client will not be charged.
"I don't think this warrants an arrest or prosecution," said Huntley Johnson, a Gainesville attorney who in the past has represented dozens of Florida athletes on criminal issues.
Johnson was asked if he any idea how long a combined investigation by the University of Florida Police and Gainesville Police would be completed.
"Ordinarily I would say as long as it takes, but I hope it's quick," he said.
Harris was suspended indefinitely the school announced Monday.
Here is the school statement:
“University of Florida student athlete Treon Harris is accused of sexually assaulting a female student early Sunday morning in a residence hall on the UF campus. The University of Florida Police Department is investigating the incident, and UFPD has brought in the Gainesville Police Department to assist with collection and analysis of forensic evidence. The investigation is ongoing and we do not have an update regarding any charges at this time. The University of Florida and the University Athletic Association are cooperating fully.”
Harris, a true freshman from Miami’s Booker T. Washington High School, came on in relief of Jeff Driskel in the fourth quarter last Saturday at Tennessee and led the Gators to a come-from-behind 10-9 victory.
“We have no tolerance for sexual assault on our campus,” Florida President Bernie Machen said in the statement. “The university is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for every member of the UF community. We must strive to protect all of our students from sexual harassment and assault, and do everything in our power to promote a safe learning environment.”
Florida coach Will Muschamp canceled his regular Monday press conference before news broke of Harris’ legal matter. The Gators are at home Saturday against LSU (7:30 p.m.) and Driskel presumably will be the starter, although another true freshman, Will Grier, was cleared to practice this week after suffering back spasms that kept him out for two weeks.
